Solvang city worker strike enters third week amid wage disputes

The labor strike involving approximately 30 city workers in Solvang, California, has entered its third week. The dispute, led by Teamsters Local 986, follows a City Council decision to impose a final contract offer featuring a 4% cost-of-living increase after five months of failed negotiations.

Union members have expressed frustration over the pay gap between staff and management, noting that senior leaders recently received salary increases ranging from 20% to 42%. Workers argue that the 4% offer fails to keep pace with local inflation and risks the loss of experienced staff. City officials have defended the compensation, stating that represented employees earn an average of $75,000 annually plus benefits.

Tensions regarding communication have also surfaced. The City Council reported that negotiators offered meeting dates to the union to resume talks, while union representatives stated they have received no such formal or informal overture. Despite the deadlock, city leaders maintain that essential services continue to operate.
