Solvay Conference 1927 gathers historic scientific minds

The 5th Solvay Conference, held in Brussels in October 1927, remains one of the most significant gatherings in scientific history. Organized by Belgian businessman and chemist Ernest Solvay, the conference focused on the theme of ‘Electron and Photon’.

The event brought together 29 delegates, of whom 17 were Nobel Prize winners. This assembly included foundational figures in modern physics, such as Max Planck, Hendrik Lorentz, and Marie Curie, who was the only woman in the front row.

The conference is also noted for the intense intellectual debates between major scientists, most notably the ideological clash between Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr regarding the randomness and probability inherent in emerging quantum mechanics.
