Som Pradosh Vrat: Significance of fasting for Lord Shiva in Sawan

In the Hindu calendar, the month of Sawan holds significant religious importance for the worship of Lord Shiva. The Pradosh Vrat, observed on the Trayodashi तिथि (thirteenth day) of both the Shukla and Krishna Paksha, is a key fast dedicated to the deity.

During the month of Sawan, a special coincidence occurs when the Pradosh तिथि falls on a Monday, known as Som Pradosh Vrat. This combination is considered highly auspicious. Devotees are encouraged to perform worship during 'Pradosh Kaal,' the period around sunset, as it is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and the fulfillment of desires.

The ritual typically involves fasting throughout the day, followed by an evening ceremony. This includes performing 'Abhishek' (ritual bathing) of the Shiva Lingam with water, milk, and Panchamrit, and offering items such as Bel Patra, Dhatura, flowers, and fruits. Traditional stories, or 'Vrat Katha,' are also recited to honor the spiritual significance of the fast.
