Somali-born Swedish citizen Bishar Mohamed sentenced to seven years for rape of teen

Bishar Mohamed, a 24‑year‑old Somali-born man who obtained Swedish citizenship in 2013, was convicted by the Falu District Court of aggravated rape and sexual assault of a 15‑year‑old Swedish boy in Borlänge. The court sentenced him to seven years in prison and ordered him to pay 370,000 SEK in damages to the victim.

During the assault Mohamed threatened the teenager with death and warned that his acquaintances would kill the boy if he reported the crime. The victim has required ongoing trauma treatment and remains fearful for his safety. Because Mohamed holds Swedish citizenship, he cannot be deported.

The case has prompted public debate in Sweden over citizenship status and the handling of severe crimes committed by naturalised citizens.
