Somali forces seize strategic territory in Middle Shabelle

Somali special forces and the Somali National Army have captured the Geel-gub area and several strategic bases in the Middle Shabelle region during an offensive against al-Shabaab. The operation involved the Gorgor Commandos’ 18th Brigade, the Special Forces’ 12th Brigade, and the 3rd Brigade of the Somali National Army. Military officials stated the offensive aims to expand government-controlled territory and re-establish security and administration in areas previously held by the al-Qaeda-linked group.

In a separate but related development regarding security in the region, reports have emerged of the killing of Axmed Shire Xuseen, a Somali National Army soldier. While traveling on leave from the Buurane frontline toward Hiiraan, Xuseen was intercepted near Ceelbaraf by an armed militia. Despite reportedly pleading for his life, he was killed; relatives noted his body showed signs of severe torture. Local reports suggest the killing may have been motivated by clan-based revenge.
