Somali Minister highlights Turkey-Somalia cooperation in energy and security

Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, emphasized the strengthening bilateral relations between Somalia and Turkey during the 9th Istanbul Mediation Conference. Omar noted significant progress in security, energy, development, and education sectors since President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Somalia in 2011.

Regarding energy, Omar stated that Turkey’s oil exploration activities in Somalia present new opportunities for business potential and economic growth. He stressed that strengthening Somalia’s capacity is essential for sustained development.

In terms of security, the Minister expressed gratitude for Turkey’s support, noting that the training of over 20,000 Somali military personnel has contributed to the fight against the Al-Shabaab terrorist group. He suggested that dialogue will ultimately be necessary to resolve the Al-Shabaab issue in the Gulf of Aden.
