Somali National Army launches Operation Banooda against al-Shabaab
The Somali National Army has launched ‘Operation Banooda’, a military campaign aimed at eliminating al-Shabaab militants across South West State. The operation began on Saturday, October 24, with a column of approximately 2,000 troops and 200 military vehicles departing from Baledogle airfield toward Buurhakaba.
Heavy fighting has been reported near Leego on the Mogadishu-Baidoa road. The Somali Ministry of Defence stated that Danab commandos engaged fighters attempting to block troop movements, resulting in seven militants killed and various weapons seized. However, conflicting reports have emerged regarding the intensity of the clashes. While the government claims success, factional sources and local reports suggest the advance has stalled due to landmines and ambushes.
Some reports indicate that al-Shabaab-affiliated media claimed the destruction of military vehicles and soldier casualties, though these figures remain unconfirmed. The military presence in Leego has led to local residents being ordered to evacuate due to fears of potential air strikes.
