Somali pirates have released the cargo ship MV Sward and its 17-member crew, consisting of 15 Syrian and two Indian nationals, following a ransom payment. The vessel had been held since its hijacking on April 26 near the coast of Puntland.

Security sources in Puntland report that the pirates abandoned the ship near the port of Garacad, where vehicles were waiting to transport them, indicating a coordinated land-based support network. During its captivity, the MV Sward was reportedly used as a mother ship to launch attacks against other vessels, including two Iranian fishing boats and the cargo ship MV Lutuf.

The release occurs amid a significant resurgence of piracy in the Gulf of Aden and off the Somali coast. According to the International Maritime Organisation, there have been at least 15 recorded attacks in the region this year, marking the highest frequency since 2013.
