Indian Navy rescues crew of hijacked Iranian vessel Azini

The Indian Navy has successfully rescued all 20 crew members from the Iranian fishing vessel Azini following a 48-hour operation in the Arabian Sea. The vessel was hijacked on October 29 by approximately 12 armed Somali pirates off the northeastern coast of Somalia, specifically between the towns of Bandar Bayla and Hafun.

The rescue mission, completed on November 2, was conducted more than 3,000 km from Mumbai. The operation was led by the warship INS Kolkata and supported by maritime reconnaissance assets, including a P-8I aircraft, a Sea Guardian drone, and an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft. The C-17 aircraft performed a precision airdrop of MARCOS commandos to secure the vessel.

Authorities, including the Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean, had warned that the hijacked vessel could be used as a “mother ship” to launch further attacks on commercial shipping lanes. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the coordinated efforts of the Navy and Air Force, noting the operation demonstrated India’s ability to respond to maritime threats across the Indian Ocean Region.
