Somali President praises Türkiye for capacity building support

Somali President Hasan Sheikh Mohamud has praised Türkiye for its long-term commitment to building Somalia’s institutional capacity. Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 15th anniversary of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s 2011 visit to Somalia, Mohamud stated that Ankara’s support has focused on “teaching us how to fish” rather than providing only temporary relief.

Mohamud noted that Erdogan’s 2011 visit, which occurred during a severe humanitarian crisis, marked a turning point in bilateral relations. The President highlighted that Turkish assistance led to the construction of schools and hospitals that serve as models for the region. He also noted Türkiye’s role in supporting Somali human development through educational opportunities for youth and more recent cooperation regarding Somalia’s natural resources.
