Somali referee Omar Artan returns to elite officiating after U.S. entry denial

Somali referee Omar Artan, recognized as Africa’s top official in 2025, has returned to the international stage after being denied entry to the United States. Despite being selected by FIFA to officiate at the 2026 World Cup, U.S. authorities prevented Artan from entering the country via Miami, citing “problems related to his background check.”

Following the incident, Artan officiated the European Super Cup in Salzburg between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa, becoming the first non-European official to referee the match. Additionally, UEFA has invited Artan as a special guest to an elite refereeing seminar in Geneva, scheduled for late August, which may pave the way for his involvement in European club competitions.

The incident has raised questions regarding collective diplomatic action. While the Somali government protested the U.S. decision, African institutions such as the African Union and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) did not issue a unified public condemnation or joint diplomatic initiative. Analysts suggest the lack of a coordinated continental response highlights the challenges African nations face in turning shared interests into collective bargaining power.
