Somalia advances on Buurhakaba amid aviation safety agreement

Somali federal government forces have launched a second advance toward Buurhakaba, departing from positions at Camp Shino and Bali-Doogle. This follows a previous attempt where Al-Shabaab reportedly destroyed or disabled three armored vehicles. While military casualties from the initial attack have not been officially disclosed, an elite Danab unit is reportedly leading the current movement while checking for roadside explosives.

The military operation occurs amid heightened political tensions between the federal government in Mogadishu and South West State President Abdiaziz Laftagareen. Critics have expressed concern that the push toward Buurhakaba could escalate political disputes into a broader armed confrontation.

In a separate development, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Somalia’s Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation Authority in Mogadishu. Under this agreement, the Somali Civil Aviation Authority will recognize the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) and the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) as acceptable means of compliance with national regulations. This initiative is part of IATA’s Focus Africa program, aimed at establishing internationally recognized audit standards across the continent.
