Somalia Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Haji deported from Kenya over alleged fraudulent passport

Somalia’s Second Deputy Prime Minister, Jibril Abdirashid Haji, arrived at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on 24 June 2024 on a Saacid Airlines flight from Mogadishu. Immigration officers noted that, in addition to a Somali diplomatic passport and a Kenyan visa, he possessed a Kenyan passport that authorities deemed suspicious. Haji admitted to having the Kenyan document but refused to surrender it, insisting the matter be resolved in court. He was detained in the airport’s VIP lounge and later escorted onto Daallo Airlines Flight D3301, departing Nairobi on 25 June 2024 and returning to Mogadishu.

Kenyan officials have not released a formal statement, and the Somali government also remained silent. The incident revives concerns about illegal acquisition of Kenyan identity documents by non‑citizens and could strain diplomatic ties between the two neighbours.
