Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur elected Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People

Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur has been elected as the new Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia. In a vote held in Mogadishu involving 171 lawmakers, Nur secured 142 votes, defeating fellow candidate Abdulkadir Omar Moallin, who received 30 votes.

Nur, a former Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, previously held roles as Minister of Defense and Minister of Justice. He also served in diplomatic capacities at the Somali Embassy in Ankara and worked with the Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency. He is an alumnus of Ankara University’s Faculty of Political Sciences.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated the new Speaker, emphasizing the House of the People’s critical role in the nation’s state-building process, legislation, and government accountability. Nur stated his intention to use his diplomatic experience to bring the Somali Parliament up to international standards.
