Somalia faces political fragmentation as local district defies Mogadishu
Somalia is facing deepening political fragmentation as opposition leaders warn of instability and local administrations challenge federal authority. Former President and opposition leader Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has called for a ‘united national front’ to prevent the country from sliding into chaos or authoritarianism. Sharif rejected the use of military mobilization or state institutions to pressure political opponents, arguing that disputes regarding constitutional mandates must be settled through dialogue and national consensus rather than force.
Simultaneously, political division has reached the district level in the Gedo region. The Doolow District Commissioner, Mohamed Hussein Abdi ‘Lafeey’, announced that the district will follow Ethiopian security policies until a Somali government capable of exercising nationwide authority is established. This move represents a direct challenge to the Federal Government in Mogadishu, signaling that the country’s administrative disputes are expanding from conflicts between the federal government and member states down to local district administrations.
