Somalia identifies 29 districts at high risk of Deyr season flooding

The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has issued a warning regarding heightened flood risks during the 2026 Deyr rainy season. The agency identified 29 districts across 14 regions as being particularly vulnerable to both riverine and flash flooding.

Heavy rainfall in Somalia and the Ethiopian highlands is expected to influence the October-December rains, potentially driven by Super El Niño conditions. Riverine flooding poses a significant threat along the Juba and Shabelle rivers, while intense rainfall over short periods could trigger flash floods in towns, villages, and low-lying communities.

SoDMA advised residents in high-risk areas to prepare in advance by identifying evacuation routes, locating safe areas, and assembling essential supplies such as food, clean water, medicine, and important documents. The agency also cautioned motorists against crossing moving water of unknown depth and urged parents to keep children away from floodwaters.
