Somalia prepares to relaunch national airline after 35 years

Somalia is preparing to relaunch its national carrier, Somali Airlines, marking its return to the skies after a 35-year hiatus. The airline originally ceased operations in 1991 following the collapse of the country’s central government.

Ahmed Moalin, director of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority, stated that preparations for the relaunch are complete. The government previously announced the purchase of two Airbus A320 aircraft to support the revival of the flag carrier. While Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport is currently served by international carriers such as Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines, the return of a national airline is intended to strengthen Somalia’s transport infrastructure and regional connectivity.
