Somalia President defends Al-Shabaab fight and warns against foreign military bases
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has defended the Somali government’s ongoing military campaign against Al-Shabaab, asserting that the militant group is weaker than in previous years despite recent territorial setbacks. Mohamud acknowledged that government forces lost control of two districts but maintained that the loss of ground does not indicate the war is being lost, citing the death of senior leaders and the loss of territory as signs of Al-Shabaab's decline.
The President outlined a three-pronged strategy to defeat the group: military operations, ideological challenges, and cutting off the group's financial resources.
Addressing regional geopolitics, Mohamud warned foreign powers against using Somali territory to conduct proxy wars or establish military bases for their own strategic interests. He specifically addressed Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, suggesting the move was driven by a desire for a naval base near the Red Sea rather than political support for the region. Additionally, Mohamud confirmed the termination of a defense and security agreement with the United Arab Emirates, stating that activities conducted by Abu Dhabi within Somalia without federal approval were illegal.
