Somalia to launch first satellite by 2027 in partnership with Turkey

Somalia plans to launch its first satellite into space by 2027 through a strategic partnership with Turkey. The initiative includes establishing a facility for satellite operations and scientific research in the Warsheekh area of the Middle Shabelle region.

Somalia’s geographic location near the equator provides technical advantages for space launches, as the Earth's rotational speed can reduce fuel requirements and increase rocket payload capacity. Additionally, the coastline offers a safe flight trajectory over the Indian Ocean.

Beyond aerospace, the bilateral cooperation between Turkey and Somalia extends to several economic sectors. This includes oil and natural gas exploration off the Somali coast, the development of the blue economy through industrial fishing, and upcoming projects in mining, agriculture, and road infrastructure.
