Somaliland authorities detain two journalists amid press freedom concerns

Somaliland security forces have detained two journalists, sparking concerns over press freedom and government crackdowns on media.

Abdiqani Hussein Abokor Baylood has been held without charge since August 29 following a video interview with poet Ismail Yusuf Abdi. The interview featured the poet criticizing authorities over an alleged illegal land seizure. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called for Baylood’s immediate release, noting that he has been held for over ten days without formal charges. Reports suggest potential charges could include offending the honor of the president and disseminating anti-state propaganda.

In a separate incident, Hassan Sulieman Haaruun, also known as Hassan Galeydh, owner of Galaydh Television, was arrested in Gabiley. His detention is reportedly linked to public statements calling for the release of Baylood and reminding President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi of his previous opposition to journalist harassment. The arrests have drawn condemnation from lawmakers and press rights groups, fueling an ongoing debate regarding freedom of speech in Somaliland.
