Somaliland Human Rights Commission flags arrests of poet and journalists
The Somaliland Human Rights Commission has raised concerns regarding the arrests of poet Ismail Yusuf (Jiheye) and journalists Abdiqani Hussein Abokor (Baylod) and Hasan Saleban Harun (Galaydh). The Commission noted that several of these detentions occurred without the required legal warrants or adherence to established procedures protecting personal liberty.
Poet Jiheye and journalist Baylod were arrested in late August and mid-September, respectively, in connection to media-related activities. Specifically, Jiheye was detained over a poem he recited, while Baylod was accused of recording and broadcasting the recitation. Both individuals remain in custody.
Journalist Hasan Saleban Harun (Galaydh) was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department on September 10. While Galaydh reported no mistreatment during his detention, he confirmed he was arrested without a warrant. He has since been released. The Commission urged all parties to respect constitutional rights and follow legal protocols during arrests.
