Somaliland independence bid faces shifting diplomatic landscape

The long-standing dispute regarding the independence of Somaliland, a breakaway region in north-eastern Somalia, is facing new diplomatic pressures. While Somaliland has operated with self-governance for over three decades following its 1991 secession during the Somali civil war, its bid for formal international recognition remains a contested legal and political issue.

Recent developments suggest a shifting landscape for the region. Following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in December 2025, there has been an increasing push within Washington to reconsider the United States' position. Although the White House has maintained that there is “no change” in its official policy, various think tanks and commentators have argued that recognizing Somaliland could enhance security in the Red Sea and near the Bab al-Mandab shipping corridor, particularly in relation to regional stability and maritime security.

Somaliland leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has engaged in diplomatic efforts in the United States, including hosting events at the Hudson Institute, as part of a broader campaign to deepen engagement with the U.S. government.
