Somaliland officials rally at UN headquarters for recognition

Somaliland officials and members of its North American diaspora held a rally outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday. The demonstration, held during the UN General Assembly, aimed to renew calls for international recognition of the self-declared republic.

The rally at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza included Somaliland House of Representatives Speaker Yasin Mohamud Hiir Faraton and other government officials. Supporters highlighted the territory’s three decades of separate governance, political stability, and functioning institutions as justification for statehood.

The protest is part of a broader diplomatic mission led by Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro. During his visit to the United States, Irro met with U.S. Senator Ted Cruz in Washington to discuss security cooperation, trade, and the strategic importance of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. In New York, Irro also met with Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, to discuss maritime security and economic development.
