Somaliland President seeks U.S. recognition and economic growth

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro is seeking increased international legitimacy and economic development for the partially recognized nation. In an interview during the United Nations General Assembly, President Irro expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting that Trump could “make more history” by formally recognizing Somaliland as an independent country.

President Irro emphasized that Somaliland would cooperate unconditionally in efforts to combat terrorism, piracy, and maritime insecurity. He highlighted the strategic importance of the Berbera port, noting that its location and security capabilities have led major shipping companies to utilize the facility for global trade routes.

Domestically, the administration is focused on strengthening national unity, improving public services, and fostering economic growth. Key priorities include attracting foreign investment in sectors such as telecommunications, renewable energy, agriculture, and fisheries, while creating employment opportunities for the youth through entrepreneurship and infrastructure development.
