Somaliland President seeks US recognition and Israeli security ties
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro is pursuing international recognition and increased security partnerships following a two-week visit to Washington. During his trip, Irro engaged with lawmakers and policy institutes to pitch the breakaway region as a strategic US security and economic partner, highlighting the port of Berbera and potential mineral resources.
Irro has expressed hope that security cooperation with Israel will begin by the end of the year. He noted that Israel has already provided training for 50 Somaliland water engineers and is expected to assist with desalination projects. He also left open the possibility of an Israeli military presence in the region.
In an effort to build rapport with US leadership, Irro proposed personal gestures such as renaming Berbera airport after Donald Trump and establishing a Trump Tower in Hargeisa. While seeking to position Somaliland as a partner for counterterrorism and maritime security near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, observers noted that these personal proposals could risk portraying US foreign policy as being influenced by flattery rather than national interest.
