Somaliland Secures U.S. AFRICOM Talks and Pushes for International Recognition
A high‑level delegation from Somaliland, led by Defense Minister Mohamed Yusuf Ali and including Coast Guard Commander Admiral Ahmed Hurre Hariye, met with U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) officials in Stuttgart, Germany. The talks focused on expanding defense cooperation, improving maritime security in the Bab el‑Mandeb Strait, and strengthening regional stability in the Horn of Africa.
In Nairobi, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro addressed Western diplomats, urging them to treat Somaliland as a sovereign partner. He highlighted achievements such as the voluntary disarmament of 6,000 militia fighters, clan conflict resolution, infrastructure projects, and a reduction in electricity tariffs. Irro also cited Israel’s recent diplomatic recognition as a breakthrough and called for further investment rather than aid.
Together, the engagements underscore Somaliland’s strategy to leverage its strategic location and security contributions to gain broader international acceptance despite its limited formal recognition.
