Somaliland seeks U.S. recognition during strategic visit to Washington

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro is conducting a working visit to the United States to seek increased security ties and formal recognition. His administration is leveraging the strategic value of the Berbera port and airfield, located near the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, as a primary incentive for American partnership to help secure maritime routes and counter regional threats.

However, the strategic necessity of Somaliland is being questioned due to reports of an expanding U.S. military presence in Bosaso, Puntland. Plans for the Bosaso airport expansion could allow U.S. Africa Command and the CIA to operate combat and surveillance aircraft directly from that location, potentially reducing the need for regional access through Somaliland.

In support of the recognition campaign, foreign policy analyst Steven A. Cook has urged the Trump administration to recognize Somaliland. Cook argues that the region’s stability and its deep-water port offer significant advantages for monitoring threats from Yemen and protecting freedom of navigation in the Gulf of Aden.
