Somaliland seeks U.S. recognition via Red Sea security pitch
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro is conducting a diplomatic campaign in Washington to advocate for international recognition and position the territory as a strategic security partner for the United States. During his visit, Irro has emphasized Somaliland’s proximity to the Red Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb strait, and the Gulf of Aden, highlighting its potential to protect vital maritime shipping routes from regional threats.
A central component of this pitch is the deep-water port of Berbera, which Somaliland presents as a key asset for international maritime security and commercial activity. While Irro is engaging with U.S. policymakers and members of Congress to strengthen ties, he confirmed that Washington has not yet made any official commitment or pledge regarding the recognition of Somaliland’s independence.
