Somba Opu Fort revitalization begins in Gowa Regency
The Indonesian Ministry of Culture and the South Sulawesi Provincial Government have commenced the revitalization of the Somba Opu Fort in Gowa Regency. Minister of Culture Fadli Zon and South Sulawesi Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman participated in the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
The project aims to restore the historical site, which was a major center of the Gowa Kingdom, to serve as both a preserved heritage site and an interactive educational tourism destination. The revitalization focuses on creating a space where younger generations can learn about the history and struggles of their ancestors.
Minister Fadli Zon has committed to supporting the designation of Somba Opu Fort as a national cultural heritage site. Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman emphasized that the provincial government will collaborate with central and local authorities to ensure the project's success while considering the needs of the local community living near the site.
