Sombor Mosque Vandalized with Ratko Mladić Graffiti

A newly opened mosque in the Serbian town of Sombor was defaced on 30 July 2026. Offensive graffiti and a mural depicting convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić appeared on the outer wall of the mosque, which had been inaugurated on 12 July 2026 with local officials, including mayor Antonio Ratković, and guests from Serbia and abroad.

The Islamic Community of Serbia, through its Mešihat in Sombor, condemned the act as hate‑speech and vandalism, urging authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible. The community noted that a similar incident occurred in December 2025 while the building was still under renovation. Officials affirmed that the mosque was built in full compliance with urban‑planning regulations and stressed the long‑standing peaceful coexistence between Muslims and the wider population of Sombor.
