Major power outages affected most neighborhoods in Nouakchott over the weekend. The Société Mauritanienne d’Électricité (SOMELEC) attributed the disruptions to a significant fire at the 35/15 KV transformation substation in West Nouakchott.

The incident impacted several key areas, including the Tevragh Zeina, Ksar, and Sebkha districts. Additionally, the power failure affected the Aghnoudert line, the Nouakchott Oum Tounsi International Airport, and the Tanit Port.

SOMELEC technical teams are currently on-site, awaiting the full containment of the fire by firefighters to secure the area. Once secured, teams will assess the damage and begin structural repairs to the damaged substation.
