Somerset finishes County Championship as runner-up after draw with Surrey

Somerset finished the County Championship season in second place after their final match against Surrey at Taunton ended in a draw. Despite a massive performance, Somerset was unable to overtake Warwickshire, who secured the championship title following a victory over Leicestershire.

In a standout performance, Somerset amassed 731 runs in their first innings. This total included a career-best 307 from Tom Abell and a career-best 229 from Tom Lammonby. The pair established a new fourth-wicket partnership record of 334 runs. Abell also contributed to a new eighth-wicket record with a 195-run stand alongside Migael Pretorius.

Surrey, who won the toss and chose to bat, was dismissed for 422 runs. Dan Lawrence contributed 139 runs during the innings. The match ended in a draw on a rain-affected final day with Surrey at 127 for 5, leaving them to finish the season in seventh place in Division One.
