Somerset flood risk requires increased collaboration

Former environment minister Rebecca Pow has emphasized the urgent need for increased collaboration to manage rising flood risks in Somerset and across the United Kingdom. As climate change intensifies, the frequency and strength of storms are increasing, leaving an estimated 6.3 million homes in England at risk of flooding.

Reflecting on the catastrophic floods in Somerset during 2013-14, which cost up to £147.5 million, Pow noted that since 2014, over £40 million has been invested in risk reduction and the creation of a 20-year flood action plan. She highlighted that flood prevention offers significant economic value, stating that every £1 spent on prevention saves £8 in avoided damages.
