Somerset tops County Championship after beating Leicestershire

Somerset has moved to the top of the County Championship table following a dominant 377-run victory over Leicestershire. The win, achieved with more than a day to spare, places Somerset four points ahead of Nottinghamshire and five points ahead of Warwickshire as the title race enters its final stages.

In the first innings, Somerset posted 363, bolstered by a century from Josh Thomas. Leicestershire responded with 157, as Craig Overton and Jake Ball took three wickets each. In their second innings, Somerset reached 316-5 before captain Lewis Gregory declared, setting Leicestershire a target of 523 runs.

New Zealand Test batsman Henry Nicholls scored his first County Championship century, remaining unbeaten on 100. Leicestershire struggled to chase the monumental target, eventually being dismissed for 145. This defeat marks one of the largest margins in Leicestershire's history. Somerset's championship hopes now depend on upcoming matches against Yorkshire and Surrey.
