Sommatino ex-mayor and Favara businessman under house arrest in corruption case
A court in Caltanissetta placed former Sommatino mayor Salvatore Letizia and Favara entrepreneur Diego Caramazza under house arrest as part of a corruption investigation dubbed “Scacco”. The probe, led by the prosecutor’s office in Caltanissetta, alleges extortion, bribery and irregular public‑procurement practices involving the municipality.
Investigators say the scheme included cash demands from vendors at the 2024 Agriculture Fair, inflated contracts for works such as Villa Garibaldi and the town cemetery, and a direct award of a €981,000 contract in exchange for a €50,000 kick‑back. About €15,000 was seized from the former mayor. Interdiction orders were also issued against several other officials, businessmen and a municipal employee, while the vice‑mayor and an assessor resigned and faced no further restrictions.
