Somme Department uses LiDAR technology to inventory roadside trees
The Somme Departmental Council in France has launched a specialized inventory of the 24,400 trees lining its departmental roads. Using a BMW vehicle equipped with LiDAR technology and cameras, the company Greehill is conducting a digital survey across 1,445 km of roadways.
The project aims to create a precise, updated database of the region's roadside greenery. Each tree is being identified and characterized by its species, dimensions, estimated age, health status, and potential risks. This data will allow authorities to monitor tree evolution over time, anticipate necessary maintenance, and manage the renewal of the roadside landscape.
The operation, which focuses on the Picardie maritime area, is designed to balance road safety with the preservation of natural heritage and the mitigation of heatwaves. The total cost of the initiative is €116,000, funded by the Department (€49,500) and the French state's 'Fonds vert' (€66,500).
