Somos México rebrands to Somos following TEPJF ruling

The political party Somos México has officially changed its name to ‘Somos’ and updated its visual identity following a ruling by the Federal Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF). The court and the National Electoral Institute (INE) ordered the changes to prevent the symbolic appropriation of national identity, arguing that the original name could mislead voters into thinking the party represents the entire country. The ruling also noted similarities between the party's emblem and those used by local parties like Fuerza por México.

The new identity features the word ‘Somos’ in pink lettering over a white background, incorporating the silhouette of the Mexican territory. Party president Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo described the ruling as ‘unjust and abusive’ and accused the federal government of exerting pressure on electoral institutions to limit political plurality. Despite the changes, the party leadership stated they will continue to operate as an opposition force heading into the 2027 elections.

Separately, Morena leader Luisa María Alcalde announced a new mechanism allowing political parties to consult the INE regarding potential criminal or security risks associated with prospective candidates. This voluntary process involves coordinating with agencies like the FGR and the Financial Intelligence Unit to identify ‘reasonable risks’ before candidates are formally designated.
