Somos México party bans its leaders from running for elected office

The newly formed Mexican political party Somos México announced a statutory “candado” that prohibits any executive party official from standing as a candidate for public office. The rule, presented at a state assembly in Xalapa, applies nationwide and is intended to prevent party leaders from using their positions for personal electoral ambition. The party has secured its official registration with the Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) and is preparing to appear on upcoming federal and local ballots. It also continues a legal challenge against the electoral authority’s order to change its name, logo and colors, arguing that the restriction on using the term “México” would confuse voters.

In Veracruz, the party formalised its new state leadership, electing Julián González as state committee president and Gladys Mercado as general secretary. González announced plans to create a “Consejo Consultivo Ciudadano” and to reserve 33 % of its candidacies for candidates under 35 years old. Both leaders reaffirmed the internal ban on leaders seeking candidacies and pledged to defend the party’s name and symbols in court.
