Mexico's new party Somos México secures registration and announces candidate quotas

The Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) granted national registration to the new political party Somos México in June 2026, allowing it to contest the 2027 federal elections. Shortly after registration, party leader Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo announced that 20 % of the party’s congressional candidacies will be reserved for mothers buscaras, human‑rights defenders and other social activists, with an additional one‑third allocated to candidates under 35. Acosta Naranjo emphasized that none of the party’s national executive members will run for elected office and that candidate selection will involve public voting in plazas.

The INE has also provided Somos México with its first party offices and an initial budget of 84.4 million pesos for the period July‑December 2026, covering ordinary expenses, specific activities, postal services and travel allowances. The party plans to hold its first national council meeting on 25 July to define its program.

Separately, Somos México’s secretary general Cecilia Soto announced that the party will file an appeal before the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF) against an INE resolution that seeks to change the party’s name, emblem and pink colour, arguing that the word “México” and the colour are not exclusive property and that the change would disadvantage the new party. The appeal follows a large rally at the Monumento a la Revolución where supporters displayed the party’s current symbols.
