Somos México party faces identity crossroads in Mexican politics

The newly formed Somos México party is at a pivotal moment, deciding whether to become a marginal ally of the ruling regime or to mount a genuine opposition to President López Obrador’s government. Party leaders cite a history of members drawn from the PAN, PRI, PRD and other former governing coalitions, and activists such as Claudio X. González (junior) and former PRD figure Fernando Belaunzarán have presented the party before the Electoral Institute of Citizens’ Participation (IECM), declaring, “Somos quienes anidamos la esperanza aún en la adversidad.”

Critics from other opposition groups, notably Movimiento Ciudadano deputy Toño Carreño Sosa, argue that the government is preoccupied with internal partisan battles, leaving pressing issues—security, health care, the economy and education—unaddressed for millions of Mexicans. Carreño warned that a focus on party infighting undermines good governance and the needs of citizens.
