Somos México ordered to change name and identity by TEPJF

The Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) has ordered the newly registered political party Somos México to change its name, emblem, and colors by August 31. The Superior Chamber's majority ruling suggests that the current name, “Somos México,” creates a “symbolic appropriation of national identity” that could confuse voters into believing the party represents the entire nation rather than a specific political option.

Additionally, the tribunal noted that the party's emblem bears similarities to those used by the local party “Fuerza por México” in certain states. While the ruling acknowledges that the National Electoral Institute (INE) previously provided insufficient justification, the TEPJF established new interpretive grounds to maintain the prohibition, requiring the party to develop a more distinct identity.

Party leaders, including Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo and Emilio Álvarez Icaza, have denounced the decision as an “outrage” and “paternalistic,” arguing it undermines legal certainty and democratic processes just before the electoral cycle begins. Despite their protests, the party has stated it will comply with the ruling to protect its official registration and plans to present a new identity proposal to the INE.
