Nicaragua celebrates National Huipil Day with cultural festivities

Nicaragua celebrated National Huipil Day with various cultural festivities across the country to honor its traditional clothing and heritage. In Managua, the Plaza de la Soberanía hosted the Gran Baile del Huipil, featuring over 3,000 participants, including dancers and the Reinas Nicaragua 2026, in a display of music, parades, and traditional attire.

Regional celebrations included a folklore festival in Somoto, which brought together delegations from Zelaya Central to showcase artisanal crafts and traditional costumes. In Bilwi, on the North Caribbean Coast, activities focused on the multiethnic identity of the region through painting, music, and educational presentations at local schools regarding the history of the huipil.

Camila Ortega Murillo, Coordinator of the National Commission for Creative and Orange Economy, noted that the huipil represents the memory of the people through its unique designs and embroidery, serving as a vital expression of national identity.
