Son Bordils estate acquired for Balearic agricultural research
The Balearic Islands Government has approved the acquisition of the Son Bordils rustic estate in Inca for 5.11 million euros. This purchase marks the first time the region will possess its own dedicated agricultural experimental farm.
The property, covering approximately 70.5 hectares, will be managed by the Institut de Recerca i Formació Agroalimentària i Pesquera de les Illes Balears (IRFAP). It is intended to serve as a permanent site for agronomic and livestock trials, testing new technologies, and professional training.
Research priorities at the site will include climate change adaptation, water-use efficiency, and the potential use of reclaimed water for irrigation. Additionally, the farm will host studies on local varieties, native breeds, and animal welfare to provide actionable results for local farmers and ranchers.
