Son Castelló roundabout expansion begins in Mallorca
The Consell de Mallorca has commenced expansion works on the Son Castelló roundabout, a critical intersection serving the entrance to Palma and the Sóller highway. The project aims to alleviate significant traffic congestion at a junction that currently handles between 36,000 and 48,000 vehicles daily.
With a budget exceeding 3.7 million euros, the project will increase the roundabout's diameter from 55 to 85 meters. The infrastructure improvements include the creation of direct access points for the Son Sardina neighborhood and the construction of 'zero lanes' to allow vehicles from Son Castelló and Son Espases to bypass the roundabout entirely. The works, awarded to the company Hermanos Parrot, are expected to take between ten and twelve months to complete.
To minimize disruption, the construction will be carried out in three phases. Authorities will implement alternative routes through the Son Castelló industrial estate, Son Sardina, and the Valldemossa highway to manage traffic flow during the execution period.
