Son La Police warn of suspicious short-duration phone calls

The Son La Provincial Police have issued a warning regarding suspicious short-duration phone calls, lasting only one to three seconds, originating from prefixes such as 022, 024, and 028. These repetitive missed calls have caused anxiety among local residents.

Authorities suggest these calls may be used by bad actors to verify active phone numbers. Once a user answers or calls back, the number is flagged as active, making it a target for unsolicited marketing or targeted scam scenarios. There are also risks of incurring unusual service fees, especially if calls are redirected to international numbers.

Furthermore, criminals may use technology to record and analyze voice characteristics to facilitate sophisticated impersonation fraud. The police advise citizens not to call back unknown numbers, to report suspicious activity to network providers, and to never disclose personal information, bank details, or OTP codes to strangers.
