Son of late Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau reportedly joins insurgency
Ibn Mohammed bin Shakau, the biological son of the late Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, has reportedly joined the ranks of the insurgent group. The report, shared by security expert Zagazola Makama, has raised concerns among security agencies regarding the potential survival of the ideological influence and networks established by his father.
Abubakar Shekau led Boko Haram during some of its most violent periods in Nigeria's North-East and the wider Lake Chad region until his death in 2021 during a confrontation with Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters. Analysts warn that the involvement of his son could complicate counter-terrorism efforts by potentially facilitating a resurgence of Shekau-era influence among younger recruits within the insurgency.
