Son Servera resumes excavations to identify Civil War victims

Archaeological excavations and investigations in Son Servera are set to resume this Tuesday as part of the V Plan of Graves of the Balearic Islands. The project aims to locate, exhume, and identify victims of the Spanish Civil War.

The work will continue at the municipal cemetery and expand to various private estates within the municipality. These efforts follow previous investigations initiated in April, which utilized historical documentation and oral testimonies to identify potential sites. Specialized teams from a joint venture between the Aranzadi Science Society and ATICS are leading the operations.

If human remains are located, established protocols will be followed for their recovery, study, and identification to ensure victims can be returned to their families for a dignified burial. Previous work under this plan included investigations in Ibiza and Formentera, as well as a July operation in Comellar Fons de Son Servera that ruled out the presence of a mass grave in the prospected area.
