Netflix series ‘The Scandal’ sparks debate over explicit content

The Netflix original series ‘The Scandal’ has sparked significant discussion following its release. A remake of the 2003 film ‘Untold Scandal’ and based on the French novel ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’, the eight-episode historical melodrama stars Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook, and Nana.

Viewers have reacted strongly to the show’s explicit content, including nude and sexual scenes. While some praise the bold, mature approach, others criticize the scenes as gratuitous or poorly directed. The series also utilizes de-aging technology (CG) to depict the younger versions of Son Ye-jin and Ji Chang-wook, a detail that surprised many viewers.

Production elements have also drawn attention. The series is noted for its visual portrayal of the Joseon era, specifically utilizing the Bukchon area to showcase the lives of aristocrats through traditional hanok architecture. Actors Ji Chang-wook and Nana have discussed the challenges of filming intense scenes, noting that building mutual trust was essential for their collaboration.
