SONAGED launches major cleaning operation in Saint-Louis

The Société nationale de gestion intégrée des déchets (SONAGED) has launched a large-scale post-rainy season cleaning operation in Saint-Louis, Senegal. The initiative, which is expected to last over a month, involves the mobilization of more than 200 agents and a heavy fleet of equipment, including seven trucks, excavators, and mechanical sweepers.

Director General Babacar Abba Mbaye stated that the operation aims to improve urban sanitation and support the city's tourism sector, which is a key economic driver for the country. The move follows concerns from local hotel professionals regarding hygiene and the city's attractiveness.

Beyond immediate cleaning, the project seeks to reorganize waste management in a city that produces between 500 and 800 tons of waste per week. Plans include renewing waste bins, rehabilitating collection points, and addressing issues at the Gandon landfill. The operation is being carried out with support from local administrative authorities, municipal representatives, and security forces.
