Sonam Wangchuk warns of hunger strike over Delhi protest detentions

Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Indian government, warning of a potential hunger strike or foot march if protesters detained during recent demonstrations in Delhi are not released. Wangchuk described the heavy police crackdown as an 'undeclared emergency' in the country.

The protests, organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar, were directed against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, demanding his resignation over allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Authorities had denied permission for the gathering, leading to the preventive detention of hundreds, including political leaders, student activists, and journalists.

Reports indicate significant tension during the police action. The CPI(M) accused Delhi Police of brutally attacking and injuring MP John Britta during his detention. Additionally, several journalist organizations, including the Press Club of India, condemned the detention and alleged harassment of reporters covering the event, noting that some equipment was seized by police.
